I met Sheila in February, 2003 at a salsa dance event in New York City. I noticed her as soon as she walked in, and waited for the perfect opportunity to ask her to dance. We talked briefly between the two dances we shared, and said goodnight. Three weeks later we ran into each other again at another dance event, where we danced and talked all night. Soon thereafter, we became a couple.
After dating for more than a year, I moved to Boston to start a teaching job at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Sheila moved to Taiwan to go to grad school. During that time apart we only saw each other twice, but stayed in touch daily through instant messages, emails, and phone calls. When the year ended Sheila moved to Boston so that we could be together.
